The Port Perry Yacht Club is chartered as a nonprofit organization operating as a private club. The difference between a Yacht Club and a Marina is in the basic method of operation. Both organizations provide a needed service. Generally, the more facilities provided, the greater the cost involved.
A Yacht Club is basically a group of interested people banded together to provide economical boating and social facilities. A Marina is a commercial organization operated by the owner or owners for a profit. A Club can provide more economical boating facilities because the Members do much of the work around the club.
The amount of work done by Members varies from Club to Club. As a general rule, the more work that is carried out by the Members, the lower the costs involved in operating the Club.
At the Port Perry Yacht Club we do most of the work ourselves and all Members are expected to do their share. It is realized of course that there will be Members that are unable to perform heavy physical tasks. However, there are always jobs to be carried out that do not require excessive physical labor.
The Club is run on democratic principals with the Officers and Directors being elected annually. The formal rules under which the Club operates are the Constitution and By-Laws. All phases of the Club operation are covered by these documents.
